How To Write A Book Description - It's A Process

After writing my first book in 2019 I had no real idea of what I needed to do next. Sure, I had grand plans of getting this beautiful, unique cover that would make my book stand out from the others and I just knew people were going to read it in abundance. How wrong I was...

Publishing a book can be almost as challenging as writing one. The ways in which publishing can be challenging are endless. Especially since I didn't take the time to learn the ins and outs of self publishing before I wrote my first words. Terminology like writing to market and genre expectations were as foreign as the eerie note of a sitar. And I knew absolutely nothing about marketing a book. The budget wasn't there, either.

I had a lot of learning to do. Facebook groups became an invaluable resource. YouTube became my classroom. I signed up for webinars and newsletters.

First, I learned about all of the elements that go into successful book marketing and how selling a book is really a funnel with the cover being the first link in the funnel chain. If the cover gives the potential reader the right information they'll move on to read the description.

Finding all the information I needed about the elements of a book description proved to be harder than initially thought. Really, it just took time for the webinars I needed to begin coming up on my feeds since I couldn't find everything I was looking for on YouTube. But since I knew I needed a description my search for an affordable book description writer started.

I soon learned that a book description could cost upwards of $100 if you want a reputable professional to write it. I definitely didn't have that much money to spare so I hired someone for $20 which was still an investment.

A bad one, since I wasn't satisfied with the results. That person just wasn't capable of capturing what I needed expressed. This experience definitely isn't the norm when it comes to more affordable book description writers. I've worked with my fair share who have given me quality work.

But sometimes a burgeoning writer may not have the budget to keep hiring book description writers until finding the one who hits all of the right notes. Sometimes a first time author doesn't know where to go to find the resources and information they need.

I learned how important running ads for my books would be to bringing readers in to check out an author they had never heard of. My search for ad copy resources began and it didn't take long before I ran into all kinds of videos and classes about writing ad copy. But none of the resources I came across mentioned books at all.

Again, it was patience and social media that brought a few webinars to my attention that were exactly what I was looking for. I was finally learning about the elements of ad copy for marketing books!

It was a process. One that I'm thankful for. Many people seem to under-appreciate the journey, to not give the process its proper respect. My advice to you is to love the process. Don't take it for granted. Suppress the urge to want to press fast forward.

But it is a process.
